Study On Translator’s Subjectivity In The Literary Translating Process

With the development of society, economy, culture, science and technology, the communication and blending of different regions and cultures have continued to be strengthened. As a bridge of communication, translating activity plays a more and more important role. Literary translation is not only an artistical recreative activity, but also a cultural communication and aesthetic activity across the time and space and the society. After the "cultural turn" in1970s, western translation research put the emphasis on the translator, which changes the translator from "invisible" to "visible" and provides a new perspective and wider research room for the translation study. The translator’s subjectivity has drawn a wide attention.The translator plays a multi-role in the literary translating process:to the original text, the translator is the reader and receptor; to the readers of the translation, the translator is the recreator. The translator is the bridge linking with different languages. However, the translator is a human being who has subjective initiative and there are many influential factors of the translator’s subjectivity, including the object limiting elements like the author, the original text and the target readers, and also including the subject influential factors like the translator’s translation purpose, personal life experience, historical and social background, bilingual and bicultural competence and aesthetic ability, which make different translators have different understandings of the original text and produce different translates texts. Therefore, the study on the translator’s subjectivity during the literary translating process and the influential factors of the translator’s subjectivity are very important.This thesis is about to expound the features of the translator’s subjectivity and further touch upon the importance and influence of the translator’s subjectivity in the translating process by comparing the two Chinese versions of Gone with the Wind-Fu Donghua’s version and Chen Liangting’s version through the research methods of comparison, analysis and deduction. This thesis expounds the differences between different translated texts on the style of expression and translation, language performance and creative treason. It also explains the object limiting elements and subject influential factors of the translator’s subjectivity which restricts the translator’s initiative and influences the final production of the translated text.
