This thesis takes the famous brand cosmetics expositions both in English and Chinese as theresearch data. It attempts to analyze the application of deontic modality in this kind ofdiscourse according to Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar. Firstly, the thesis carries ona contrastive analysis of the similarities and the differences in expression forms of deonticmodality in English and Chinese cosmetics expositions. At Systemic Functional Grammarlevel, this thesis pivots on the interpersonal meanings of deontic modality from differentlexical levels and different kinds of clause levels. We find that deontic modality is realizeddistinctly in English cosmetics expositions, while the realization of deontic modality isexpressed in terms of exaggeration. The research indicates that the manufacturer and theconsumer share the responsibility in varying degrees for cosmetics expositions designed indifferent cultural history background. We suggest that it is necessary to know the applicationof deontic modality in cosmetics expositions for our analysis of the similar discourse and theattitude, so that the better communication can be made between the manufacturer and theconsumer.
