Allan Poe has a special position in the American literature history. He madeformidable contribution for American literature and even the world literature. Thecore of Poe’s short novels theory is "unity of effect". The narrative skills he used inthe novels are under the influence of "unity of effect".From narrative angle, this paper researches the narrative art of Allan Poe’s shortnovels, and combining with "unity of effect", it analyzes how to practice the "unity ofeffect" through the use of narrative skills. The research content of the paper includesthree parts:The first part is from narrative perspective. The most novels of Allan Poe are thefirst person narrative perspective. In this part, the paper mainly studies the first personperspective interweaving of inside and outside, and the situation of first personperspective invading to omniscient view,. And it analyzes the narrative effect of thefirst person perspective. The second part is from narrative structure mode. This partmainly summarizes three structure models of the novels, that is, layer transfer type,exploring type and embedded type. And it analyzes the narrative effect of variousstructures. The third part is from narrative space and time. On one hand, this partanalyzes the time of Allan Poe’s short novels. On the other hand, it divides the spaceof the novels into eerie objective physical space and figures gloomy psychologicalspace, and then summarizes their features. At last, combining with time and space, itanalyzes the narrative effect of closed narrative space and time.
