Due to its special attraction, detective novels have been attracting the attention ofmany readers and translation scholars. Arthur Conan Doyle is one of therepresentatives on western detective novels. Many Chinese readers are attracted by hisdetective novels of Holmes because of his rigorous thinking and careful logic.Therefore, abundant works have been translated and brought into China.Since detective novels are translated into Chinese and published, they have beenreceiving favors by many readers. However, the history of translation research ondetective novels is not long and relevant translation researches on detective novelsand comments are rare. Although the translation research on literary text has achieveda great progress, in most cases, linguistic theories and techniques are applied to othertext researches and they are seldom combined with translation theories. In the light ofconversational implicature theory, taking―A Study in Scarlet‖as the research text, thethesis is intended to probe into the motives for the translators‘choice of strategies intheir translation on the basis of the analysis and study of the conversations from thenovel.After the careful research, the following conclusion is softly drawn: first of all, inthe translation of conversations from detective novels, the variation of characters inconversations will require different translation strategies; secondly, the choice ofstrategies chiefly depends on the context; thirdly, in translating conversations,sometimes, the employment of one strategy doesn‘t achieve desired result, it requiresthe joint efforts of two or more strategies.
