Note-taking is one of the most important skills in consecutive interpretation.Note-taking is to help understanding and memory. There are no rigid rules. Each interpreterhas its own behavior. As a tool, note-taking should always play a positive role. However,because student interpreters may not have developed sufficient skills, note-taking mayexert negative impact on the quality of interpretation. This thesis analyses two roles ofnote-taking in the Chinese-English consecutive interpretation on “China’s Real EstateIndustry and Urbanization”. One is its positive role, and the other is its negative impact.And in order to improve this skill and maximize its positive influence, the thesis suggestssome exercises: improve the symbol system, do practice without notes, harmonizenote-taking and listening, improve the ability of deverbaliztion, enhance eye contact,increase the amount of information stored in short-term memory, amongst others. Insummary, this thesis is to maximize the benefits of note-taking and improve the quality ofinterpreting.
