After the Cultural Revolution, in order to revitalize the Chinese literature, it was urgent toget rid of the ultra-left trend of thought and cultural tyranny. Many influential westernliterary works including those of D. H. Lawrence which represented the new trends ofthought were translated. Lawrence was no longer regarded as a “decadent writer”, but thechoice and strategy of the translation of his works were still manipulated by mainstreamideology. From the late1980s, while the strength of ideological manipulation reduced,people shifted their focus in translation and research to the modernity and artistictechniques in Lawrence’s works. At the end of1990s, various western literary theorieswere introduced into China and the translation of Lawrence began to have new literarysignificance.In order to contribute new perspective to the causes and influence of the translation ofLawrence during the New Period, the arrangement of arguments follows the change ofstrength of ideological manipulation. The thesis intends to conduct a study on thesignificance of translation under the political, economic and literary background. Withparticular attention to the change in the interpretation of Sons and Lovers and LadyChatterley’s Lover, it analyzes the interaction among ideology, conception of literature andtranslation activitiesThe introduction part introduces the background of translation studies on Lawrence, thesignificance of the topic and the research approach. It points out that the research coulddiscover the transformation in translation, research focus and conception of literature byfollowing the strength change of ideological manipulation. Chapter One discusses howideology manipulated the social-cultural purpose of translation and the standards for thechoice of western literary works in translation. It specifically looks into how translatorslegitimized Sons and Lovers politically, as well as how researchers interpreted its themes.Chapter Two explains how the reduced strength of ideological manipulation was related to the emergence of the upsurge in Lawrence studies from the aspects of translation market,new translation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover and shift of focus in Lawrence studies. ChapterThree illustrates the transformation in the image of Lawrence and his works, as well as theinfluence of translation on the conception of literature, in order to find out the literarysignificance of translation. As the final part, the conclusion concludes the influence andsignificance of the translation of Lawrence on the Chinese researchers and writers.
