Literary translation is the earliest and most important translation activity in the history of translation(Hu Gengshen,2004: 23).The study of literary translation has always been focused on translation strategies.Translation strategies include domesticating method(domestication)and foreignizing method(foreignization)according to Lawrence Venuti's definition and classification. In China, the related research has been divided into two categories of theoretical study and application study from various perspectives. In recent decades,Translation Studies has seen an unparalleled prosperity and a trend of interdisciplinary development.Under the influence of global ecological thoughts, translation study in the perspective of ecology arose.Domestically there are two theoretical frameworks of Eco-translatology and Translation Ecology, which are different from each other and interrelated with each other. They all try to push the translation study to a new stage. As a popular classic,Gone with the Wind has been studied from various perspectives such as characters analysis, translation studies, theme analysis and feminism in abundant study papers.Among them, the study on its various Chinese translation versions becomes the center of translation circle.Just like other translation works, the translation study on Chinese versions of Gone with the Wind is confined to the perspectives of linguistic approach, theory of literature and art, cultural approach, polysystem theory and deconstructionism and so on.This thesis will discuss these two translation strategies through a case study on two Chinese translations of Gone with the Wind by Fu Donghua and Li Meihua respectively in a brand new perspective, namely translation ecology.By applying the theory of translation ecology, the thesis goes through the eco-environment influencing the two Chinese translation works, including social, normative, physiological and psychological environment and the mechanism and laws of their interactive effects,so as to prove the reasonableness and unreasonableness of the adopted translation strategies.By diachronic comparison, the thesis intends to figure out certain laws and trends of strategy choosing with the guide of translation ecology. In addition, through the case study on the Chinese translations of Gone with the Wind, the thesis tries to explain the influence of eco-environment on literary translation, and offers a prediction that foreignization will play the key role while domestication as a supplementary in the future foreign literary translation in China based on the analysis of present translation eco-environment.This thesis adopts literary review approach, systems analysis, comparison approach, exemplification approach, deduction and induction approaches.Through a case study of the translation strategies used in the two Chinese translations under the frontier perspective of translation ecology, this thesis tries to find the ecological law behind the adoption of translation strategy, and to predict the trend of translation development on the basis of the achievement of the predecessors.By doing such a research, the author intends to fulfill the application of the translation ecology,as well as to enrich the research perspective, breadth and depth of translation studies of Gone with the Wind.
