Division And Synthesization Applied To E-C Translation

The translation project studied in this paper is excerpts from American Wayspublished in2011by American scholar Gary Althen. The biggest difficulty in thetranslation of the text is that there are many sentences that need changing theirstructure so as to get adapted to Chinese ways of expression. Some need to be dividedand some need to be synthesized. It is often impossible to keep the original form ofthe sentence. Therefore, attempts are made to discuss the problems found intranslating American Ways from the angle of application of translation skills ofdivision and synthesization. The report collects and categorizes the sentences thatneed structural change, discusses the differences between English and Chinese thatinfluence the structure of sentences, namely the differences in word order,subject-predicate relationship and length of sentences, and then discusses how to usethe translation skills of division and synthesization to cope with these differences.This report uses comparative study and example analysis. It compares differencesbetween English and Chinese in terms of word order, subject-predicate relationshipand length of sentences, compares the different situations where the sentences needstructural change, and uses many typical examples from the source text to support thepotential conclusions. The significance of this study is that it gives two effectivesolutions—division and synthesization in treating sentences which need structuralchange in the process of English-Chinese translation. It discusses how to use the twomethods to achieve successful transformation of the two languages.
