Tolstoy, the famous educator, said the successful education lies in arousing students’interest in learning not compulsion. Since interest is the motivation of learning, the successfulteaching should focus on cultivating the students’ interest in learning. In the modern Englishteaching, teachers should not only develop students’ language knowledge and skills but alsocultivate their interest first, so as to them learning happily.However, the college art-majors’ foundation of learning is week than that of other majors,having no interest in their study, especially English, because of traditional view andemployment concept. Through teaching practice in class, the author finds that this kind ofstudents wants to get high scores by working hard, but they lack in interest in English evenhate it because of some reasons. Such as, many college teachers still adopt the traditionalgrammar translation, ignoring situational teaching and cultivation of students’ independentability and comprehensive ability. According to the college art-majors’ current situation oflearning, the author does some in-depth exploration in accordance with her own teachingexperience so as to cultivate interest of English learning for college art-majors.In this thesis, the author analyzes the background, purpose and the significance oflearning interest first. In the part of literature review about interest, some related researches athome and abroad are introduced which include concepts, classifications and functions ofinterest, discuss the importance of interest in English learning. The cultivation strategies ofinterest in English learning are provided by the Learning Theory of Humanism, Maslow’sTheory of Needs and Krashen’ Affective Filter Hypothesis.Second, the author surveys the current situation of interest in English learning byquestionnaire, analyzes the factors which influence the interest of English learning for collegeart-majors from the perspective of learners themselves, teachers and outward conditions.Finally, according to the present problems, the author provides some strategies of interestcultivation in English learning for college art-majors’ students, helping the learners andteachers to find a way to solve problems in teaching and learning, promoting their desire forEnglish learning, facilitating English teaching to be orderly implemented. Moreover, thelearners’ English level will be improved.
