Fuzzy Language Translation Strategies In Yang’s English Version Of Hong Lou Meng From The Perspective Of Vague Language Transfer

Vague language, language transfer and translation are key points in this term. While the proper noun "fuzziness" has been widely accepted by the public for many years, the use of "vagueness" almost is still controversial among the scholars in this area. Certainly the boundary between these two vocabularies isn’t very clear and according to this paper,"vagueness" just covers a wider range than "fuzziness"(this can be concluded from the definitions in dictionary on these two words), which may not be the best choice in many situations of the academic research. Therefore, the fuzzy language that many scholars have paid attention to could be seen as a part of "the vague language"Although many researchers have shown interests in exploring the vague language in translation, the research of vague language transfer in A Dream of Red Mansions is far from fully explored. The language used by Cao Xueqin in this significant works is really recondite, complicated and multi-variant. Without hard, particular study and suitable translational words, the original words in this literary works cannot be understood very well. From the quotation of vagueness theory by modem innovative development in vagueness translation, author of this thesis will take the roles, dialogues and environmental vague descriptions in A Dream of Red Mansions as research objects to have a deep exploration in skillful translational approaches to vagueness utilized by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang. Their logic thoughts, selections of diction and expressive approaches in vague language area should also be attached much importance to. Different forms of vague expressions in this literary works and the corresponding approaches to translation utilized by translators will be taken as a source of reference. Just like Zhu Guangqian’s view,"language is limited but its artistic conception is unlimited. Language is scrambled in appearance but its artistic conception is mixed and united. Language is fixed and indicated but its artistic conception is intangible and with many changes within a short time. Description of the artistic conception is just like painting a definite object by dotted line, which can only copy the form without understanding the substance."(Zhu Guangqian,1982:476) To some extent, the diction here is in exaggeration on vagueness but Zhu Guangqian has given a clear indication on the difficulty of vagueness translation.The significance of this paper focuses on the reference of the literary works version-----A Dream of Red Mansions to have a foresight on how to make an innovation about translation in vague language in literary works of Chinese to English in the future. During these steps, integration of different culture backgrounds, thinking modes, expressions, language permutation as well as combination, the semantic balance and language situations should be controlled as much as possible to maintain a natural language transfer of translational thought and boost the further development of vague language translation.
