A Study On C-E Translation Of The Diplomatic Speeches In Light Of Skopostheories

With the rise of China’s international status in the global arena as well as the enhancement of itsoverall national strength, China is arresting worldwide attention in the diplomatic realm. The world as awhole is paying its due attention to the impressive achievements in the diplomatic realm, an ancient orientalnation with a history of5,000years behind it, playing an indispensable role in the international community.As we know, diplomatic speeches play an important role in the diplomatic sphere in China. Therefore,translators pay more and more attention to the translation of diplomatic speeches.The research materials of this thesis are diplomatic speeches. The typical example is those deliveredby Hu Jintao, the head of China, at APEC Leaders’ Meetings. The thesis conducts a research in light ofskopostheories, the core theory of German functionalist translation school, to discuss an issue---in order toachieve the communicative skopos of the translated speeches, what kinds of translation strategies thetranslator has taken in the course of translation?The specific research process as follows: in the first place, the translated speeches’ communicativeskopos have been identified with reference to the original speeches’ communicative purposes, the propertyof diplomatic speeches, as well as the skopostheories. Secondly, some concrete examples have been used(in lexical level, syntactical level as well as discourse level) to analyze what translation strategies can beused in the translation process in order to achieve the translated speeches’ communicative skopos. Finally,according to the basic rules of skopostheories, the definition of translation strategies and so on, the authorjudges which translation strategy is more effective to achieve the translated speeches’ communicativeskopos.In the conclusion, the communicative skopos of the translated speeches are that: Skopos One: to getacross to the members of APEC the China’s suggestions on better economic development in Asia PacificRegion; Skopos Two: to promote (better) understanding of China’s facts among APEC members. In orderto achieve the skopos One, the translator adopts domestication strategy in lexical level, syntactical level aswell as discourse level; In order to achieve the skopos Two, the translator adopts domestication strategy insyntactical level and discourse level, while in lexical level, both domestication strategy and foreignizationstrategy are complementary to each other. In the end, the conclusion has been drawn that at lexical level,syntactical level as well as discourse level, domestication strategy is more effective to achieve thetranslated speeches’ communicative skopos.This research fully proved that translation is an activity of communication with purpose (especially the translation of diplomatic speeches), which is largely meant to be the cardinal principle that translators mustbear in mind all the time in the process of translation. At the same time, some strategies found in thisresearch possess certain practical meanings to both the translation of diplomatic speeches and translator’straining.
