Coping Strategies Of Culture-loaded Expressions In Diplomatic Interpreting From The Perspective Of Domestication And Foreignization

This thesis aims to study the coping strategies of culture-loaded expressions in diplomatic interpreting from the perspective of domestication and foreignization.Culture-loaded expressions are usually difficult to interpret.There are two reasons.Firstly,they usually carry certain cultural implications;secondly,time for interpreting on the spot is rather limited.Despite these difficulties,diplomatic interpreting,different from other interpretation,bears three distinct characteristics including formal style,political nature of texts and sensitivity of wording.With these characteristics in mind,interpreters often find it even more difficult to interpret Chinese culture-loaded expressions into English in a proper way.Under this circumstance,interpreters not only need to deliver the cultural implications,but also to meet the requirements on diplomatic occasions.Therefore,in practice,how to deal with culture-loaded expressions in diplomatic interpreting remains a daunting challenge for many interpreters.This thesis is designed to contribute to the solution.Due to the lack of interpreting practice on diplomatic occasions,the author decided to mock interpret Foreign Minister Wang Yi's press conferences in 2017 and2018.Before the mock interpreting,the author has done much preparation work based on the topic and background.During the mock interpreting,the interpreting of the author has been recorded.After the practice,the author has compared her interpretation with that of the working interpreter Sun Ning,who is from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.Under the guidance of domestication and foreignization,literal interpreting and implication interpreting are mainly used to interpret culture-loaded expressions encountered in the mock practice.When the emotional colors of the cultural elements are opposite in the two languages,it is advisable to apply domestication.When the cultural elements are easy to explain and literal interpreting still makes sense in English,it is advisable to apply foreignization.When the literal meaning and implication of the culture-loaded expressions are the same in Chinese,both domestication and foreignization can be used.
