Backward classes in India are a special social group. They suffer fromdiscrimination, marginalization, exploitation and violence. Their social and economicstatus is extremely humble. The paper will take the main parts of the backward classes,i.e., scheduled castes and scheduled tribe, as the main object of study, divided intofour chapters. The first chapter discusses the backward classes in India and theirsocial components. The second chapter focuses on the formation of the backwardclasses and the influence of caste system. The third section discusses the historicalstruggle of the backward classes, especially the struggle in modern times. Chapter IVdiscusses the attitude of the Government of India towards the backward classes and itsefforts to solve the problem. Finally, the paper discusses the status quo of thebackward classes. I argue that that under the complex reality of Indian society it isvery difficult to really resolve the problem of backward classes.
