As one of the important elements of a language, vocabulary is the mostvigorous part which reflects the changes of a language most rapidly. Word mouldof new words, as a language phenomenon in the development of contemporaryChinese vocabulary, is worth making much study and research. In his article“word mould”, Li Yuming divides word mould into three categories: forepartempty, rear empty and middle empty. The thesis carries out a detailed analysis andresearch on the category of rear empty based on the related concepts andexpression of word mould proposed by Li Yuming.The thesis studies and analyzes the related problems of rear empty of newwords in four chapters. Chapter One introduces the concept of word mould andmakes a brief discussion on the previous studies, with a focus on the definitionand characteristics of rear empty on the ground of the viewpoints of Li Yuming. Acomparative study of rear empty is made in Chapter Two among the semanticcharacteristics, combination features, color features, productivity andcorrespondence of the three groups of word mould:"hot X","cold X" and"lukewarm X","high X","low X" and "medium X","former X" and "latter X".Chapter Three studies the similarities and differences between the traditionalexpression "be VP" and the new one "be X" through the case study of "be X"based on generation and evolution of "be done". From the perspectives ofsociology and linguistics, Chapter Four carries out an elaborate analysis on thecauses of word mould and makes a prediction on the trend of its development.
