This paper studies the characteristics, generation mechanisms and causes of variation of contemporary Chinese-English rear empty fusion words, and their impact on the contemporary Chinese lexical system. The so-called "contemporary Chinese rear empty Chinese-English fusion word" refers to the word formed by the combination of the sign of the mould being English-derived component in the front, and the groove of the mould being Chinese-derived component since the reform and opening up in 1978.The purpose of this paper is to further study the contemporary Chinese rear empty Chinese-English fusion words,to make up for the lack of research on contemporary Chinese Chinese-English fusion words,to explore the characteristics of rear empty Chinese-English fusion words, and to investigate the generation mechanisms, the causes of variation of rear empty Chinese-English fusion words, and their influence on the contemporary Chinese lexical system.Based on the characteristics of rear empty Chinese-English fusion words, this paper applies language contact theory, metaphor and metonymy theory, conceptual integration theory, construction coercoin theory and word mould theory as the theoretical basis for analysis and exposition, and adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis, description and interpretation,as well as the comparative method. The paper is divided into six chapters.Chapter 1 Introduction. It defines the research object of this paper, sorts out the relevant studies, introduces the relevant theories and research methods applied in this paper, and clarifies the research value and research objectives of this paper. The literature review includes studies on the introduction of foreign words(morphemes),the internal components of foreign words, the semantic construction of foreign words, the structural rules of foreign words, the Chineseization of foreign words, and the families of words with foreign components.Chapter 2 discusses the characteristics of contemporary Chinese-English fusion word mould. As a large number of rear empty Chinese-English fusion words are generated based on rear empty Chinese-English fusion word patterns, this chapter discusses the characteristics of the components of rear empty Chinese-English fusion word patterns and their interrelationships, including the syllabic features, grammatical functions and semantic categories of English-derived signs of the moulds and Chinese-derived grooves of the moulds, and the syllabic, grammatical and semantic relationships between English-derived signs of the moulds and Chinese-derived grooves of the moulds.Chapter 3 describes the generation mechanisms and causes of variation of rear empty Chinese-English fusion words in contemporary Chinese. The mechanisms of bilingual-source triggering variation,tri-principle conjugation derivation and melted media dissemination diffusion are the general generation mechanisms of Chinese-English fusion words in contemporary Chinese. In addition, the mechanisms of phonological-semantic harmony,cross-linguistic prefix borrowing and grammaticalisation of the Chinese system are also involved in the generation of rear empty Chinese-English fusion words. The main reasons for the variation of rear empty Chinese-English fusion words are social factors, cognitive factors and word collocation factors.Chapter 4 discusses the characteristics of contemporary Chinese-English fusion words in a case-by-case manner. This chapter compares and analyses three groups of rear empty Chinese-English fusion word families with similarities, depicting and highlighting the characteristics of each in comparison. The three groups are the "shai X" and "xiu X" families, whose signs of the moulds are related to the meaning of "show",the "wang X" and "yun X" families, whose signs of the moulds are both related to the Internet, and the "bo X" and "tui X" families, whose signs of the moulds are related to social platforms.Chapter 5 discusses the impact of rear empty Chinese-English fusion words on the contemporary Chinese lexical system. The rear empty Chinese-English fusion words fill the "lexical gaps" in the contemporary Chinese lexical system, enrich word coinage and word formation of the Chinese language, and reveal the laws and mechanisms of Chinese lexical derivation in the process of language contact.Chapter 6 summarises the findings of this paper and provides an outlook for future research. The English-derived signs of the moulds of contemporary rear empty Chinese-English fusion words are mainly monosyllabic and bisyllabic, and their grammatical functions are mainly nouns. The relationship with the semantics of English-derived foreign words is shown to be dominated by the original meaning of English-derived foreign words, supplemented by the generalized and attributive meanings. The Chinese-derived grooves of the moulds of contemporary rear empty Chinese-English fusion words are mainly bisyllabic, and their grammatical functions are divided into two cases: as a non-functional core and as a functional core.Their semantic content is inherent in Chinese, and can be divided into four types:person, thing or phenomenon, action and feature. The monosyllabic and bisyllabic English-derived signs of the moulds are mainly paired with monosyllabic and bisyllabic Chinese-derived signs of the moulds. The typical grammatical relationship between the English-derived signs of the moulds and the Chinese-derived grooves of the moulds is that they are direct components of the grammatical structure, while the atypical grammatical relationship is that the combinations of the English-derived signs of the moulds and a part of the Chinese-derived grooves of the moulds with the remaining Chinese-derived Chinese-derived grooves of the moulds components are direct constituents of the grammatical structure. The English-derived signs of the moulds provide the semantic background or action behaviour, while the Chinese-derived grooves of the moulds provide the semantic core or description of the action behaviour and their objects. The generation of contemporary Chinese-English rear empty fusion words is governed by both the general generation mechanisms of contemporary Chinese-English fusion words and its unique generation mechanisms.Due to social and cognitive factors as well as word collocations, contemporary Chinese-English rear empty fusion words usually undergo variation in the process of usage. The large number of rear empty Chinese-English fusion words has had a profound impact on the lexical system of contemporary Chinese,as they have filled the "lexical gap" in contemporary Chinese, enriched word coinage and word formation of the Chinese language, and contained the laws and mechanisms of Chinese lexical derivation in the process of language contact.Since the object of this paper is rear empty Chinese-English fusion word with lexical family characteristics,it does not cover the verbal combinations of English-derived components with Chinese-derived components, which are currently weakly combined with Chinese-derived components. As the ability of these English-derived components to combine with Chinese components strengthens, the resulting word families should also be included in the scope of the corresponding study.
