Study On Allusions Of Qin Guan’s Verses

Being a representative of the Romantic School, Qin Guan has not been studiedthoroughly for long since his ci is much more highly appreciated by scholars thanother genres such as verses or poems which are even regarded as sissy without aproper evaluation. Therefore, there is an urgent need for deeper study into his otherworks. Qin Guan’s verses enjoyed high reputation in the North Song Dynasty, beinghighly appreciated not only by himself but also by Su Shi, who was a famous poet atthat time. In this thesis, a deep study on Qin Guan’s verses will be conducted and bespecialized in the useage of classical allusions in verses. The resources of Qin Guan’sallusions and references cover a large range, including various historical classics withboth elegance and vulgarity and even ancient wisdom and anecdotes. An investigationis made into the usage of classical allusions and a convincing conclusion is reachedthrough statistical methods, showing a catalog of different allusion resources by theirdivisions, i.e. Jing, Shi, Zi, Ji, respectively with detailed information, clear contentsand accurate data. In the latter part of the thesis, anecdotes in Qin Guan’s verses aregoing to be studied, including politicians, celebrities, chivalrous people, hermits andeven legendary tales. As for the ancient wisdom, the same method is adopted; fivecatalogs are discussed, namely revision of wisdom in Yi, in historical literature,Confucius and Mencius prose, The Book of Songs, The Songs of Chu and verses orpoems in previous dynasties. Being an excellent essayist with sheer brilliance andprofessional writing skills, Qin Guan showed unique feature in his verses with sixobvious allusion usages including universality, accuracy, flexibility, revision,creativity and originality.
