George Orwell (Pseudonym of Eric Blair,1903-1950) is the most significant writers in the early20th century in the world. His two representatives and legendary life experience have secured him a permanent place in English literary and the world literature as a whole. By publishing Animal Farm in1945and Nineteen Eighty-four in1949, his work never failed to address public political attentions. In the late period of his career, Orwell’s central message was a warning against the evil of totalitarianism in all of its forms. Mainly based on a concentrated study on the above mentioned two books, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-four, this thesis intends to analyze the anti-utopian thought in Orwell’s work and demonstrate how, in his work, George Orwell tried to resist totalitarianism by clearance the set of philosophical ideas and a code of behaviors, which means the resistance of totalitarianism.This thesis consists of five parts—three chapters as the body part plus all introductions and a conclusion. First of all, George Orwell’s biography, his achievements and literary background are briefly depicted; research done both at home and abroad concerning George Orwell and his works are also briefly reviewed in the introduction. The body part of the thesis is outline as follows:Chapter one, the author defines the philosophical item of Totalitarianism, about the definition of it, the development of this ideology as well as the historical and political issues under the background of the totalitarian dictatorship. In the Chapter two, George Orwell’s two representatives are analyzed from the political methods of totalitarianism. Finally, with a balanced evaluation of this philosophy, its significance and implications are to be clarified.The conclusion points out that despite its weakness, George Orwell’s philosophy functions as a positive strategy to resist totalitarianism in his ages. Despite his inability to take into account its negative impact, George Orwell has developed a possible strategy for living under and responding to the threats of totalitarianism actively.
