An Empirical Study On The Influence Of Learning Outcome On Motivation In Foreign Language Learning

English is the most widely used language in the world. With the development ofChina’s interaction and communication with the rest of the world, English has wonincreasing attention in China. In most universities in China, English has beenestablished as a compulsory course for college students, and once passing thenational-wide college English test even became one of the criteria for students’graduation. It has been proven that motivation, as a social-psychological factor,facilitates English learning by stimulating learners’ initiatives, which is one of thefactors that account for different learning outcomes for students under the samelearning environment. Therefore, inspiring learners’ motivation is an effective way topromote learning performance and teaching efficiency.Since many previous researches have explained that motivation has a greatinfluence on learning outcomes and how it works, this research tries to study therelation between the two concepts from a different angle, to see the influence oflearning outcomes on motivation. This research answers the question how learningoutcomes affect motivation of foreign language learning, through an empirical studybased on questionnaires and interviews with informants of non-English major students.The findings show that learning outcomes do have influence on motivation in foreignlanguage learning and indicate the most influential factors to motivation anddemotivation, which provide some implications for teachers on how to give feedbacksto learners and how to encourage them on their future outcomes, in order to makethem feel more motivated and make good learning performance.
