An Analysis Of Adaptation In Two English Versions Of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan

Verschueren proposes that the use of language is the process of constantly makingdecisions under conscious level to meet communication needs. As a cross-culturalcommunication activity, translation is a special form of using language, and is aprocess of constantly making decisions by a translator serving for the purpose andneeds of translation. Therefore translation should also be studied from the perspectiveof adaptation theory. In this paper, an application of adaptation theory is discussed,from the study of linguistic adaptation and extra-linguistic adaptation to explore theEnglish translation problem of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan.The author takes the translation practice of Ah Q Zheng Zhuan and translationbackground of different translators as a research object, and then combine with atranslation adaptive phenomenon, illustrating the contextual adaptability, structuralobjects adaptability, dynamic of adaptability and salience of adaptability, and then onthe relationship between adaptation and translation of text and discussion ofpreliminary performance. By combining corpora in translation and the use ofadaptation theory, this article demonstrates the importance, necessity and skills ofusing adaption in the process of translation. Through the comparison of linguistic andextra-linguistic translation of adaptation theory, this thesis tries to identify the differentadaption strategies and adaption inclinations applied by translators. In which linguisticlevels for lexical, syntactic, semantic and stylistic adaptation, mainly forextra-linguistic level mental, physical and social world. By analyzing and listing out ofthe main factors (privilege language and cultural difference, social awareness andtranslation ideology differences) affecting the translators adaption inclinations, thispaper makes a detailed analysis. Finally according to translator under the influence ofdifferent adaptation inclinations, this paper gives suggestions on how to avoidtranslation absences, mistranslations and also points out some technique tips for translation, such as annotation, context extension, interpretation, etc.This thesis demonstrates an application of adaption theory in translation, showstheir reasonability and operability while also revealed the importance of the translationof literary works. Besides that, it also provides an explanation of the differenttranslation methods and strategies adopted by different translators. Therefore, itprovides a new perspective of exploring the translation of literary works and study, andit makes progress towards a more broad space of translation studies.
