Based on the study of Baoan, which located in Jishishan Baoan Dongxiang SalaAutonomous County, Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, this thesis tries toanalyze the features of the Baoan costume in different periods so as to provide valuableinformation for the study of Baoan costume culture through field survey and literature research.Baoan costume is a combination of Baoan’s costume form, function and connotation whichcarries the ethnic history and culture. Under the influence of natural environment,socialstructure,economic model,religious belief, customs and other factors, Baoan costume forms itsown feature that shows the connotation of its social culture.This thesis, on one hand, tries to analyze the connotation of Baoan costume culture whichbased on the study of Baoan’s ethnic origin and composition. On the other hand, the study oncostume development can provide theory basis to validate Baoan’s ethnic belonging andcomposition. There are six parts in this thesis. The introduction part gives an account of thebackground, purpose, meaning and current situation of Baoan costume study. The first chapterintroduces Baoan’s current situation, ethnic characteristics and ethnic origin. The second and thethird chapter compares Baoan’s current situation with its history and compares the connotation ofBaoan’s social culture with its extrinsic characteristics. In this part, the original data that gotfrom the field research of Jishishan County is used to analyze how do ecological environment,economy, values, religious belief and customs influence Baoan’s costume style, color and pattern.A comparison between Baoan and other surrounding minorities also is made in this part. Thefourth chapter discusses the connotation of Baoan costume and the connection between Baoancostume and ethnic belonging, ethnic spirit and ethnic psychology. The last part is theconclusion.
