With college enrollment expanding, the number of college students has been swelling rapidly. This also gives rise to a series of problems, that is, students’ stress growing in job hunting and their mental problems increasing. And keeping students" mental health has been one of the important routine in college with the development of college education reform. Counselors, as the front-line workers in handling students’ affairs in college, play an important and special role in keeping students’ mental health, for whose effect affects college stability and development. This thesis innovatively studies how college counselors handle students’ mental problems so as to explore mental health education models and methods suitable for Chinese college students, which is also the inevitable requirement of social progress on cultivating high-quality all-round talents.The thesis is made up of five parts. The first chapter introduces the current situation of college counselors’ role in dealing with students’mental problems and puts forward the ideas and ways to study the issue. The second chapter defines the concepts of students’ mental problems, mental health education in college and college counselors, and puts forward the idea that counselors are the major power in keeping students’ mental health and the reserve forces in giving counseling due to their different roles in daily work in the past and at present. Chapter three elaborates the current situation of college counselors in handling students’ mental problems, mainly the analysis of the necessity and difficulty of counselors’ keeping students’ mental health. Chapter four lists some examples of counselors dealing with students’ mental problems from the points of study, interpersonal relationship, love affairs and job hunting, and puts forward advantages of college counselors in doing this from four aspects, namely, time, information, communication and role. That is, counselors can get the information of students’ mental problems at the very beginning and solve them by communication, for the close touch with students and the trust they get from students. Chapter five is the most important part which is also the innovative part of the research. It talks about how counselors transfer their role from the traditional sense and become real "counselors". In doing this, they should improve their knowledge in psychology and grasp the methods and techniques in psychological counseling. Meanwhile, counselors should keep the concept of counseling in mind and apply it to handle students’ affairs. And the thesis suggests one particular student should be assigned to report the whole class’ mental status, and records of their mental status should be established.
