This paper attempts to explore these questions in order to makesome useful complement on the Ming Liaodong research.Specifically, Firstly, the early Ming Liaodong Division’s population and itsgeographical distribution is the result of a two-way force. Liaodong Division islocated in China’s northeast, weather condition is worse than the Central Plains andthe South; all kinds of threat of military forces on surrounding.West is Mongolia, north is Nvzhen, East is Korea, so Liaodong Division has become the only channel toCentral Plains, then is contested; Yuan Dynasty red scarves uprising, LiaodongDivision’s economy had been devastated and its social environment is unstable. Therefore, Liaodong Division’s geographic environment does not constitute a strain toattract a large number of people. However, such a geographical environment becamethe background of Liaodong Division’s population’s rapid growth. It is this naturalgeographical environment and human geography environment that made LiaodongDivision’s population growth to be possible.Secondly, because of the military importance of Liaodong Division, the soldiersguarded the border with the families has became one important measure of centralgovernment. Owing that the Ming government made the “Qingjun” system and thepenal system, making Liaodong Division absorb the majority of the population whowere banished from outside the Liaodong. Because of the Liaodong Division andShandong had convenient traffic condition, coupled with unique properties, making the Liaodong Division attract some of the development-oriented migration after thesocial economic became stable. Therefore, we can check the amount number is513562from “Liaodong Zhi”.Thirdly, because of Liaodong Division ’s location, military situation, economiclevel had specificity, so the population distribution is not free. Liaodong Division doesnot set prefecture but constituted“Weisuo”to manage. People are assigned to a fixedWei. Thus, the research of population’s geographical distribution, the last to go and itwas finally went to explore the Weisuo’s distribution. While the Weisuo’s distributionwas affected by political and military factors, showing a sheet or point-likedistribution. The same ethnic groups mostly stayed in a same zone. Finally, the early Ming Liaodong Division’s population and its geographicaldistribution which has far-reaching impact on the Ming Liaodong Division’sdevelopment.
