For decades of years, the term of linguistic rules awareness has drawn theattention of researchers, and the relationship between linguistic rules awareness andEnglish reading was mostly examined. The researchers have discovered that thephonological awareness plays an important role in predicting the reader s readingcomprehension. Because of the phonological awareness, the reader can know how todevise and construct the language elements effectively, how to increase the speed ofvocabulary recognition and how to establish the corresponding correlations betweenwritten and oral language. Besides, the study had found that there is magnificentcorrelation between the syntactic awareness and the English reading comprehension.Because of syntactic awareness, the reader can integrate the decoded words intomeaningful sentences. However these studies were mainly conducted among native young readers. Most of these studies focused on the relationship of phonological awareness andsyntactic awareness with the reading comprehension of the native readers. The studyon the correlation between awareness of linguistic rules and the learningperformances of adult EFL (English as a foreign language), especially collegestudents is rare. The present research tries to explore the correlation between the Chinese collegestudents awareness of linguistic rules and their English learning performancesthrough series of experimental studies. The participants are the students from onevocational college of foreign languages in Hebei as the samples. The present studyaddressed the following questions:(1) How are college students aware of Englishlinguistic rules generally?(2) In what aspects do good performers and poorperformers differ in their awareness of English linguistic rules?(3) How is student slevel of English connected with their awareness of relevant rules? The researchconducted in this thesis reveals that: Chinese college students aware better in rhymethan in phoneme in general; the syntactic awareness of college students has developedwell. The phonemic awareness of good performers in English learning is better thanthat of poor performers in English learning, although there is no significant differencein their rhyme awareness. The good performers in English learning perform better in syntactic judgment and syntactic correction than poor performers in English learning;the result shows that good performers of English learning outstand poor performers inEnglish learning in syntactic awareness as a whole. The phonological awareness is asignificant predictor of word recognition; syntactic awareness is found to be animportant predictor of sentence reading and discourse reading performances. This present study is composed of five parts.Chapter one serves as the introduction to the whole research. It describes theresearch background, objective of the research and the significant of the research.Chapter Two is literature review. This chapter presents the related referenceshome and abroad concerning the present study. It presents the relevant theories onlinguistic rules.Chapter Three presents the design of the research. It introduces the researchsubjects, the participants, the instruments and the procedures of this research.Chapter Four shows data analysis of the study.Chapter Five presents the discussion. This chapter presents the results derivedfrom the data analysis of the research and some discussions of the findings.Chapter six is the conclusion part. This chapter is the final part of the dissertation;Firstly, it states the major finding of the present study. Then it points out thelimitations of this research and addresses some suggestions for the future studies.
