Linguistic rules are the essential elements of language formation and language development, which are important tools for mastering a language. Reviewing the journy of English language teaching in China, the main content of class-room English teaching has long been the lecturing on English linguistic rules. This kind of traditional teaching mode leads to a perfect grasp of grammatical rules in students' mind, while appear a lower level in English verbal communication. However, nowadays, the foster of English communicative competence is becoming a main stream and principle teaching objective. Whether the learning of linguistic rules is out of date, what role linguistic rules play in modern English language teaching and what reasonable teaching approaches should be taken to help master linguistic rules are under the research of this thesis. Referring to relevant theories of psychology and linguistics, the thesis emphasized on the importance of linguistic rules in English language learning. Based on Krashen's Input Hypothesis of Second Language and the basic theory of Children's language development, the author expounded that the mastering of linguistic rules serves the fostering of English communicative competence, probed into some reasonable approaches to mastering English linguistic rules, and provided some suggestions on English language teaching. It is expected to provide some valuable sense for contemporary English teaching.
