’The doctrine of the mean’ is the most significant content of the Confucianism, and it also serves as the ultimate orientation of the esthetics. Where the essence of the thought is lies in ’the doctrine of the mean’, which summarizes Chinese historical governing experience, learns the lessons from them and puts these theories into practice. As Confucius thought,’the doctrine of the mean ’represents natural conscience of human containing spirituality of logical thinking and also the nature of animal such as desire and selfishness and so on. However maintaining balance and harmony between the notable spirituality and inferior nature of animal to bent neither one way nor another is the vital part of what makes a human being, rather than the conflicts between them. Only to comply with the principle of Ren and Li in actions can one attain the high moral qualities without utilitarian. It is the modesty and the nonutility that become the focus of the Confucian aesthetic, which can make a difference in real life and rectify the biased parts of the modern western thought.
