Alban Berg is one of the central figures of musical expressionism in the twentieth century. In recent years, more and more people in the music world began to pay close attention to his works. Unique and original harmony, free and nontraditional musical texture, bold and exaggerated processing of dynamics and speed, emotional expression with great tension are the features of his works and this unique creative style has led the trend of music in the beginning of that century. After my literature review, I find that there are many research articles about Berg and his musical works. However, for his only piano work-Piano Sonata (Op.1), most of the researches in China focus on the writing techniques. Few people research from the perspective of playing techniques. To better understanding this piano work, based on Berg’s whole life, his writing style and techniques, the interpretation of playing techniques, and combined with my own experience of playing this work, I analyze the creative features and the playing techniques of Berg’s work, demonstrating the value of this work and providing instructive advice for music amateurs and professionals so that they can better understand and interpret this work. Finally I draw a conclusion by analysis:Berg’s Piano Sonata, finished at the beginning of his creative career, applied the "atonal" skill of expressionism, which was greatly influenced by his teacher Schoenberg. The work applied a great many nontraditional harmonies--fourth chord and augmented triad, polyphonic techniques of linear counterpoint, melodic texture presented as semitones and full tone series, with distinct contrast of dynamics and speed. The creative approach of this piano work undoubtedly laid solid foundations for the latter creation of twelve-tone and the success of Berg. At the same time, Berg’s Piano Sonata also promoted the development of atonal music in the twentieth century greatly.
