A Study On Women Installation Art In Chinese Contemporary Art

This dissertation studies on the women installation art in Chinese contemporary art with the methodology of theory research and art work analysis combination. Chinese women installation is more specially than some other kinds of traditional art like painting and sculpture. There can be summarized in three areas should affect the Chinese women installation art. Firstly, the western modern art theory, which has the same influence on most Chinese male artists. Secondly, the western feminism theory and feminism art theory, which brings a new method to art creating and theoretical criticism as well. Thirdly, the traditional Chinese gender perception. In this way, Chinese women installation art has a diversified landscape.The western feminism brings a new method to theoretical criticism. However, there is a question arose, whether this kind of method, which developed in western culture and female history, can be accepted by Chinese women art? The talking of important concepts in western feminism art which include the female identity, gender, are based on the critique to male structure of power, to realize the aim of reconstructing the women and women art history. To a certain extent, there is a confliction relationship between western feminism art and male structure of power. However, Chinese women faced a very different situation to those western women and women artists. In this way, the validity and limitation existing together when we use the feminism theoretical criticism in Chinese women art study.Meanwhile, in western feminism art the difference existing between initial and late stages. Dualistic gender concept is one of these differences. In Chinese installation criticism, many critics also use the dualistic gender concept as the method, in this way, there are many contradiction arose on the topic of women material, women identity and women method in art creation.Through the intensive study on material, concept and method of art creation, this dissertation tries to discuss and query feminism criticism in Chinese installation art critique, and presents the real and diversified art concept of Chinese women artists and their works.
