Reassessing the tradition is the chiefly academic theme during the entire20th century. Likewise, the reform of traditional opera launched by Chinese government aims to follow this trend:let the "traditional opera" head for "new society", wherein the evaluation on traditional repertoire generated in feudal society is one of its integral part. How to interpret famous classical operas like A Legendary Pipa in this new society not only involves the theoretical study of classical literature——drama, but also directly relates to stage practice. The symposium on A Legendary Pipa held in1956was the ever largest academic conference in the early years. And the participants’evaluation perspectives and points of view are different to each other’s completely. The symposium on A Legendary Pipa in1956is a typical case where the art and literature scholars of the new country attempted to reinterpret the classical operas like A Legendary Pipa through the literary points of view of Marxism-Leninism, also become a silhouette of the reform of the traditional opera and a significant phenomenon on the history of the contemporary Chinese opera.Up to now, the Chinese Opera Reform has passed over half century, yet in this thesis, through the analysis of the phenomenon with typical characteristics in the history of contemporary opera, the author firmly believe that the regression of traditional opera aesthetics verve and respecting for its artistic characteristics, should be the future fate of the broad road of opera.
