In recent years, China, as a destination of tourism has been attracting more and more foreign tourists. Scholars have paid more and more attention to the translation of tourist materials. Because of the linguistic and cultural differences between Chinese and English tourist materials, cultural loss has become a common even serious problem in C-E translation of tourist materials.Based on the research of some representative tourist materials, such as Hangzhou Travel Guide, there exist four types of cultural loss in tourism translation: insufficiency of historical information about dynasties, figures and allusion, insufficiency of religious and legendary information, insufficiency of Chinese cultural associative meaning and insufficiency of Chinese specific aesthetics.Under the guidance of German functionalist translation theory, to achieve the two functions of tourist materials:marketing function and cultural output function, three principles are suggested for cultural compensation in tourism translation: marketing orientation, cultural output orientation and target reader orientation. According to these principles, translators should take more flexible and effective translation methods for cultural compensation:amplification, adjustment and explanation, to improve the quality of translations of tourist materials and achieve the two functions of tourist materials.
