China's government has vigorously promoted Chinese culture going global. The Palace Museum, receiving a great number of foreigners annually,is the most important medium of introducing Chinese culture. It is the essential condition that these cultural relics are equipped with correct English names.Scholars at home and abroad have done a great number of researches on the translation of names of cultural relics from various perspectives. However, the results of these researches are too general and make a limited practical contribution. In addition, researches from the perspective of translation compensation use translation compensation as a translation method, not a theoretical framework. When translators probe into the translation of cultural relics names, further researches shall be done in terms of the classification of loss, the situation needing compensation and translation strategies adopted.Given this, the research, with translation compensation as its theoretical framework, analyzes the loss in translation and the translation strategies of names of cultural relics. The research findings are as follows: 1.The compensations that translators need to make are more of cultural aspect and linguistic aspect, therefore “expressiveness” and “faithfulness” deserve more attention during the translating process.2.Information in names of cultural relics which need compensation includes: information does not exist in English culture;information does not exist in modern Chinese;information has different meaning in ancient Chinese and modern Chinese;abbreviation exists in names;literal meaning has limited relation with the cultural relic;translators have a purpose of retaining Chinese characteristic. The first five ones are resulted from the development and transformation of Chinese.Since the information contained in names of cultural relics originates from ancient Chinese, equivalence can not be found in modern Chinese, not to mention English.3.For the cultural loss and linguistic loss, the research promotes six translation strategies: transliteration, literal translation plus annotation, explanatory translation, descriptive translation, substitutive translation, concretization translation. If taking foreignization as the main purpose, translators can adopt the first two translation methods. If domestication is the main purpose, then the last four translation methods can be used.Translators can adopt different translation strategies to compensate for the loss according to the circumstance. The research, from the perspective of translation compensation, analyzes the classification of loss and translation strategies of names of cultural relics. The above research findings are hoped to provide references for future researches on translation compensation and translation of names of cultural relics, and to offer help to future translation practice of names of cultural relics.
