The practice report is made on the basis of translating the Tourist Guide ofXingcheng city. The thesis consists of four parts: the task description, the task process, the case study and the conclusion, of which the first two are a comprehensivedescription of translation practice, an introduction to what the translator does before, after and even in the course of the translation. The writer attempts to present thereasons of applying cultural compensation strategy and the ways of using translationtechniques and discuss cultural differences between the two languages in the third part.A summary of translating feelings was made and conclusions of the report werereached in the last part. There are enormous cultural factors in the tourist text. If simple translatingmethods are taken in the course of translation, such as literal translation, the primitivemeaning information, pragmatic functions, cultural factors and aesthetic form arebound to be lost and it is impossible to get equivalent translation. Therefore, culturalcompensation strategy should be applied to bridge the gap between Chinese andwestern culture so as to made the tourist guide effective. From the perspective of thedifferences between English and Chinese languages, this thesis points out the losses inthe Chinese-English translation. The writer by citing the examples explores the waysto use the translation techniques such as amplification and specification under theguidance of cultural compensation strategy and instrumental translation strategy to make up for the differences that exist in the tourist guide. This paper concludes that the translator can use the unique language means todeal with those words or sentences which is hard to translate directly, such as punsand allusions in the process of translation. The available means used by the translatorscan be generally divided into three types: simplifying source text, increasingsignificance and appropriately adaption, all of which can bring out the best in eachother. Thus cultural compensation strategy plays a better part in translation Chinesetourist guide into English.
