The Kite Runner is the first book of the Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini. The debut work of Khaled Hosseini was a successful one; it attracted the attention of the world once it was published. Since the author refers to redemption as the theme of the book in several interviews, research papers both in China and abroad instinctively focused on the theme of redemption. However, the description of Amir’s life experience and his character can be regarded as a typical model of Freud’s Tripartite Personality Theory. This description also represents Hosseini’s own reflection of the human personality.By analyzing the protagonist Amir’s personality development, this thesis aims to find the reasons for young Amir’s personality conflicts by applying the topographic theory and other important theories of psychoanalysis to the interpretation of Amir’s personality. Furthermore, this thesis wants to reveal the positive forces that lead young Amir to a more balanced personality, thus offering some help to those who feel lost in the cruel reality.
