Khaled Hosseini is a well-known Afghan-born American writer who was born in 1965.Most of his works are set in wars to reveal the human nature.Up till now,he has published four books, including The Kite Runner,A Thousand Splendid Suns,And the Mountains Echoed, and Sea Prayer.Among them, his first novel The Kite Runner has aroused great discussion since its publication in 2003,and has occupied New York Times bestseller list for 101 weeks. The Kite Runner tells a story in war-torn Afghanistan, whose protagonist Amir was regretful for making a wrong decision when he was young, and found the way to be good again after he became an adult.Scholars at home and abroad have analyzed the novel from various perspectives. However, few scholars have concentrated on the theme of the doubles in the novel. In light of J.Hillis Miller's repetition theory, the paper analyzes the double relations in the novel. This thesis is divided into five parts.Chapter One illustrates briefly Hosseini's life career and his literary achievements, explains the main plot in The Kite Runner, and offers international and domestic literature reviews. It also elaborates the theoretical foundation, the double theory and the repetition theory as well as the significance and layout of the thesis.Chapter Two illustrates the design of several pairs of doubles, including manifest doubles and latent doubles, and offers in-depth analysis of the influence of the doubles on the main protagonist.Chapter Three analyzes the repetition phenomena related to the doubles in the novel by means of close reading. The repetition in the novel can be divided into three categories: repetition of words, repetition of images, and repetition of scenes or events.Chapter Four is based on the two modes of repetition and explores the phenomenon of repetition closed to the doubles in the novel, namely the Platonic repetition and the Nietzschean repetition.Chapter Five concludes the thesis, and points out some limitations of the study. In short, the author makes the protagonist Amir complete the process of self-realization through the setting of double characters.Meanwhile, the relationship between the protagonist and double characters promotes the development of the plot and the sublimation of the theme, forming a unique narrative structure, namely repetition.
