As an important bridge in the international exchange of every field, interpretationplays a more and more significant role in the current world. However, as a kind ofcommunicative activity, it can only be accomplished in certain context, and the twoare inseparable. Therefore, the relationship between the context and interpretation isworth of further study. As a kind of communicative behavior, interpretation is a dynamic selection andadaptation process under the action of specific contextual factors. It is unavoidablethat the interpreter will encounter the problems of language selection to satisfydifferent contextual factors, thus to reach the communicative purpose of transferringthe information of source language accurately. The Belgian pragmatic secretaryJef.Verschueren proposed from the pragmatic angle that the adaptation theory wasstudied from the perspective of language selection. Under the framework of theadaptation theory, the contextual adaptation is mainly divided into the adaptation tolinguistic and non-linguistic context, in which the non-linguistic context consists ofsuch components as society, the world, etc. while the linguistic context includes thecontextual components, such as the lexical factors and syntactic factors. Variouscontext connects with each other and develops dynamically in the communications. Therefore, in this paper, each related factor in the context during the interpretingprocess, the mutual interact between the context and interpreter and the ways how theinterpreters finish the dynamic adaptation process and accomplish the interpretingtask are analyzed according to the theory of adaptation.First of all, the interpreting process is studied, the traditional study on the contextis reviewed, and shortages are proposed. Based on the introduction to itscharacteristics, the relationship between the interpreting process and the context isanalyzed simply, and the dynamic trend of the interpreting context is introduced. And than, focusing on the Verschueren’s “adaptation theory”, namely the adaptation, themain concepts and contents of the “adaptation theory” are introduced. At last, theproblems of contextual adaptation during the interpreting process are analyzedintensively. The “adaptation theory” is applied into the interpreting studies to analyzethe specific contextual factors in the special communicative process, and the wayshow adaptation theory acted and how the interpreter adapted to and dealt with thecontext are discussed with examples.
