Application And Strategies Of Contextual Relations Dynamic Adaptation In English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpretation

This paper is based on a real simultaneous interpretation(SI)activity which is a pre-job training course with the theme of "intercultural fluency" for European Confucius institutes principals.As a demanding multi-task and bilingual communication activity,SI carries different background factors.The SI for training course is characterized by strong colloquialism,active interaction and rich culture element.The SI context and interpreter's psychological cognitive context are changing as the speakers,accent,speed,theme and content change.Therefore,context is closely connected with the whole SI thinking process,affecting the interpreter's dynamic choices.To adapt to the SI context,convey the speaker's real intention,comply with the cultural and thinking habits and improve the translation acceptability,this paper aims at studying the methods of applying "adaptation theory" proposed by Belgian linguist Verschueren to guide the SI practices.This paper can be divided into four chapters.Chapter One is "Task Description",which analyzes the background and features of this SI task.Chapter Two "Task Process" specifically describes various preparation work and interpretation process.Chapter Three "Case Study" is the main body,which focuses on the methods of applying dynamic adaptation in the changing SI contextual relations.Its structure covers three parts,namely the theoretical analysis,contextual relationship analysis and dynamic adaptation strategies analysis.The first part starts with theoretical basis,and through analyzing the main content,development and research achievements of"adaptation theory",the paper further explores the necessity and feasibility of combining "adaptation theory" with SI.The second part is context analysis.Through summarizing the dynamic features of SI contextual relations,the paper further discusses the ways of language selection.Then,it analyzes interpreter's awareness of applying dynamic adaptation according to the context.The third part puts forward the related dynamic adaptation strategies in view of SI contextual relations.On the basis of the context classification proposed by Verschueren,the paper starts from the aspects of linguistic context and communicative context.Under the linguistic context,the paper explores the methods of achieving language structure adaptation from the perspective of vocabulary selection layer and syntax selection layer.Under the communicative context,strategies of "omission" and "replacement" are proposed in the "mental world" to reduce interpreter's psychological load and cognitive pressure and make the translation more concise and efficient.This SI activity carries much cultural information,therefore,in order to adapt to audience's cognitive need,the paper puts forward "amplification" strategy and "summarization" strategy in the"social world".The misunderstanding brought by cultural differences will be reduced through further explanation,de-verbalization and generalization.Chapter Four is the conclusion.
