New Horizon College English (NHCE) textbooks have been widely used sincefirst publication in2001. In2008, the second edition was published based on therequirements of College English Curriculum Requirement (CECR) formulated byEducation Administration in2007. Since then this set of textbook has been used forthree or four years. So the researcher had a preliminary study on the applicability ofthe textbooks.Relative theories are reviewed, including definition and role of textbook;textbook evaluation; teaching objectives, teaching model and teaching requirementsproposed by CECR (2007). Based on them, the questions are raised:1) whether thesecond edition NHCE can meet the needs of learner in local colleges and universities2) whether it can match the requirement of CECR as to develop students’ ability touse English in a well-rounded way?Data is collected by questionnaires, interviews, classroom observation anddiscussion, and Excel is used to analysis the data. Then the results of data analysis arediscussed and some suggestions are put forward. The findings of the study indicate that:1) the second edition of NHCE canbasically meet the needs of students in local colleges and universities;2) it cancultivate students’ comprehensive ability which is put forward by CECR. However, information about Chinese culture should be supplemented; and the exercises andteacher’s book need some improvement.
