Phonetic teaching is the basis of English teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Mastering the scientific method of teaching is the key factor of the phonetic teaching. With the warming up Chinese language in America, more and more American students choose to come to China to study Chinese.The phonetic ingredients and speech rules in English and Chinese have their similarities and differences. In order to improve the spread of the Chinese teaching, reform and perfect the Chinese phonetic teaching to the students in America, it is an indispensable part to make a comparative study of the two languages. Thus, after the introduction of the background knowledge about the English language, at first, the author conducts the comparison of the English and Chinese in phonetics. The aim is to explore how to let American students reduce the negative effects and increase the positive functions in phonetic teaching.The differences of the two languages are the main factors of language learning and we must pay high attention to them. Therefore, in the second chapter, the writer mainly analyzes and studies the errors for American students in Chinese phonetic learning and points out the reason caused these errors.Phonetic teaching to American students aims to let the students form skills by learning the rhyme and tone instead of mastering the phonetic rules. Hence, the first two chapters are the service of phonetic teaching. In order to let the students to learn Chinese phonetics in high efficiency, besides actively carrying out educational rules, the teachers must pay attention to some related principles of teaching Chinese as a foreign language and summarize some directional teaching methods. Finally, in the last chapter, the author proposes some principles which teachers should follow and some effective teaching methods in phonetic teaching.
