This report is based on chapter two of the first part in Intercultural Communication in Contexts. This book mainly introduces the definition, development status, main characteristics of intercultural communication, and how to research and explore intercultural communication in the social, political, and historical contexts.Judging by its content,it belongs to an informative text. This report mainly focuses on the differences between the Chinese and English languages, and combines Catford’s theory of structural shift, class shift, and unit shift.Catford’s translation shift theory has a very important guiding significance for the shifts of words, sentences, and grammar encountered in the process of translation from English to Chinese.A good application of this theory can solve the problems brought by differences between English and Chinese languages in translation. In the report, examples are used to explain the basic methods of applying translation shift theory. The translation shift theory will be instructive to the application of the theory in the future translation.
