This is a report on the translation of chapter 3 of Prosodic phonology.Prosodic phonology,an academic text, offers systematic explanation and analysis of phonological units, which is of influence and significance in phonological field.During the translation process, the translator found that special terms and long sentences were problems. Thus, the translator read relevant literature and works and consulted dictionaries to acquire deep knowledge and understanding on these aspects, which benefited her translation. Moreover, the translator chose Translation Shift Theory of Catford(1965)as the guidance.Translation shift consists of different levels of shifts, and in this report, the translator chose class and unit shifts to guide word translation, and level and structural shifts to guide sentence translation. With the guidance of shift theory, the translator found that class and unit shifts enabled the target text more smooth and idiomatic;level and structural shifts could be the solution of problems of syntactic difference between English and Chinese.Although, shift theory was proposed relatively long time ago,it can still effectively solve problems of linguistic difference between English and Chinese, which is of positive guidance and value to the translation of such academic text.
