For language learners, Chinese is one of the most difficult language to learn. Besides thepronunciation, tones, characters and grammar is also a difficult point for the language learner.Chinese auxiliary verbs are one of the most difficult area of grammar for foreign languagelearners to master. Many Indonesian Chinese learners have difficulty when studying auxiliaryverbs and often make errors when using auxiliary verbs. Therefore, the title for this thesis is;Research Of An Error Analysis And Teaching Methods For Indonesian People In LearningChinese Auxiliary Verbs. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the errors that are often made byIndonesian people when studying Chinese auxiliary verbs and at the same time try to analysethe type of errors that are made, in order to discover the reason why these errors occur. Finally, this thesis will look at the teaching process in accordance with the phenomena of errors. Due tothe limitation of research time, I will analyse the errors that occur with regards to “can, could, want, need, and may”.This thesis uses questionnaires as the main research method in order to gain informationpertaining to the students knowledge of Chinese auxillary verbs. The purpose of this thesis isfor the University of Indonesia, Chinese Program Studies Department, third grade and fourthgrade students. The research for this thesis includes75example questionnaires. Everyquestionnaire has four parts. The first part lets the students use an underline to highlightauxiliary verbs. The second part lets students use the most appropriate auxiliary verbs to fill inthe blanks. The third part lets students make the negative form of sentence with auxiliary verbs. The fourth part lets students fix sentences with auxiliary verbs. A time allocation of30minutesis allowed for students to complete the questionnaire. Finally,73examples of usefulquestionnaires where used in the research. The basic composition of the thesis is divided into four parts. The first part, explains aboutthe meaning, classification, similarities and differences of auxiliary verbs in both the Chineseand Indonesian language. Auxiliary verbs in the Chinese language belong to a verb category, but the Indonesian language does not have this category for auxiliary verbs. However, most ofthe Chinese auxiliary verbs have corresponding words in the Indonesian language, but theusage differs, for example “want” or “need” is clearly different in the Chinese language, but inthe Indonesian language is no major differences, both of them could be translated as “ingin”.The second part is a comprehensively analyse of the type of errors and the reasons whythese errors occur. After analysing the survey questionnaires, five kinds of errors that are often made by Indonesian Chinese learners during their study of auxiliary verbs were noticed: theerror of omission, error in usage, confusion in usage, word order error, and avoiding use. All ofthese errors happen because of a variety of reasons, such as: international language error, national language error, learning material error, teaching methods error, and another errors. The third part contains several suggestions for avoiding all mistakes that have beenexplained above. Firstly, before the class begins, the teacher should clearly understand thestudents language background and level, this can make it easier for the teacher to identify ateaching method that is suited to the students; After identifying which kind of teaching methodto use, the teacher should renew the teaching materials and lesson plans. Secondly, whenexplaining about auxiliary verbs to the students, the teacher should stress explanationsrepeatedly in order to remind students about the characteristics of Chinese auxiliary verbs, andthe similarities or the differences among the auxiliary verbs themself. Once again, the teachershould also prepare a variety of exercises and homework to nurture students capability in usingChinese auxiliary verbs. The fourth part is this thesis’s conclusion. Due to the analyse, five kinds of errors that areoften made by Indonesian Chinese learners during the study of auxiliary verbs were noticed, errors that often occur are: the error of omission, the error of usage, and confusion in usage. These errors mostly occur because of international language error and national language error. After considering the reason for these errors occurance, finally several possible solutionspresented themselves. Suitable ways for teaching Indonesian people when studying Chineseauxiliary verbs, such as the teacher should understand students condition, research teachingmethods that are suitable for students, and also fully prepare teaching material, lesson plan, exercises and homework. As a non-native Chinese language learner and realizing that complete mastery of theChinese language is still very far away, however, this work offers a insight into student errorin the language process and hopes to help teachers reduce such errors with better preparationand a better understand of teaching methods.
