The Study On Metonymy Meaning Of Nouns And Its Paraphrasing In Language Dictionaries

The metonymy meaning of words is a kind of characteristic and important type of words’meaning, but for a long time, people do not pay enough attention to the metonymy meaning ofwords, the research is not fully, at the same time, the existing problem and mistakes inmetonymy meaning paraphrasing in various dictionaries increasingly cause the attention ofpeople. This paper chooses the metonymy meaning of nouns which is a typical of metonymymeaning as the research object, selects Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(the fifth edition)(hereinafter referred to as "Xianhan") for closed corpus, completely counts the metonymymeaning of nouns in it, analyses and summarizes the types and characteristics of themetonymy meaning of nouns, explores the law of the metonymy meaning’ paraphrasing, andpoints out the existing problems of Xianhan in nouns’ metonymy meaning paraphrasing,inorder to improve the cognition of the metonymy meaning of nouns in Modern Chinese,and toimprove the scientificalness of language dictionaries in paraphrasing of metonymy meaning.The article is divided into four parts:The first chapter the introduction consists of two parts. The first section outlines theresearch status of the metonymy meaning of words, and points out three problems existing incurrent research: there are different views about the relationship between the metonymymeaning of words and the metonymy rhetoric, divergences exist on the definition of themetonymy meaning of words, there is a urgent need to standardize the paraphrasing of the themetonymy meaning of words.And puts forward his point of view on the former two problemson the basis of predecessors’ view,insists that the metonymy meaning of words are from themetonymy rhetoric,and there are narrow concept and broad concept on the metonymymeaning of words, the narrow sense of the metonymy meaning of words refers to the derivedmeaning from the metonymy rhetoric, and the general concept includes the metonymymeaning both from word-formation and from meaning extension.The second sectionillustrates the definition of the metonymy meaning of words of this paper, which is thegeneralized concept of the metonymy meaning of words, and the object of study, the source ofthe corpus, writing thoughts of this paper. The second chapter gives a quantitative and qualitative analysis on the metonymymeaning of nouns in Xianhan. The first section studies368nouns with metonymy meaning inXianhan from the metonymy way, naming way, and word-formation three aspects：accordingto the metonymy way into three types19small classes, according to the naming into thenamed metonymy and the unnamed metonymy， according to the characteristics ofword-formation divided into word-formation and meaning extension metonymy meaning ofwords. The second quarter discusses the characteristic of the metonymy meaning of wordsfrom indirection and dependence, single-meaning and multi-meaning, literariness and culture,epochal characters and national characters four anglesChapter3discusses rules on the paraphrasing of the nouns’ metonymy meaning.According to the characteristics of the metonymy meaning of nouns, this chapter discussesthe paraphrasing rules of nouns’ metonymy meaning of language dictionaries by entriesestablishing,paraphrasing,terms using three aspects, sums up8explanation ways on theparaphrasing of the nouns’ metonymy meaning. This paper argues that, entries establishing indictionaries should combine the nature of the dictionary, we must distinguish the metonymymeaning of words and metonymy rhetoric, entries arrangement should comply with thederivative rules of the metonymy meaning of words. In paraphrasing, we shouldchose"original meaning (or literal meaning)+the metonymy meaning of words+grounds" asthe basic pattern, and pay attention to the explanation of the original meaning of words andthe grounds of meaning, and pay attention to pointing out the usage and the colour ofmeaning,too.Finally, this paper discusses the role of the definition terms, summarizes thedefinition terms and their respective usage in Xianhan’s paraphrasing of the nouns’ metonymymeaning.Chapter4points out the mistakes in paraphrasing of the nouns’ metonymy meaning ofXianhan,and expresses personal viewpoint in three fields:entries establishing,paraphrasing,terms using.In respect of entries establishing,there mainly exist meaning’sleaving out and meaning’s ranking problems;the paper highlights mistakes inparaphrasing,which are classified into five categories:first,the metonymy meaning of wordsare mistaken as figurative meaning;second,too short or not detailed; third, explanation errors;fourth, explanation is not complete; fifth, part-of-speech tagging error.At last, it pointsout the problems on terms-using of Xianhan:many but not special,disaccord,mixing up,andPoints out the correct way.
