On Xu Yuanchong’s Verse Translation From The Perspective Of Deconstruction

Xu Yuanchong, with his high reputation in the field of translation in China, is one of the most influential translators our country. His creative translation theory and methods also draw more attention from many scholars in other fields, thus making it a controversial topic. As far as the author is concerned, both his theory and practice are worth reconsidering. But the question is from which perspective we can draw a conclusion. There is no denying that his translation is in the fancy style popular in these years. Although there may exist many researches being done on this topic, few of them are from the perspective of deconstruction.The prosperity of deconstruction, which is derived from the1960s in France, results in an influential thinking wave in the West. It criticized structuralism and systematically deconstructed the concepts of structure and meaning, thus making its foundation possible. With the great revolution in philosophy and literature in the20th century, translation also shifted its direction. Deconstruction has been applied into translation. It appeals to set up a system, polyphyletic, open and unfixed. Meanwhile, deconstruction prefers more versions for the original to only only a standard one. A creative translated text cannot be restricted to the original, which can be realized by taking full advantage of the subjectivity of the translator. Hence the equal status between the author and the translator exists. The thought put forth by deconstruction is totally different from traditional thinking, while it has something in common with translation theories of Xu Yuanchong. The thesis analyzes Xu’s translation theories as well as practice from the perspective of deconstruction. The first chapter introduces deconstruction and its translation strategies; at the same time, it gives a brief introduction to Xu’s theories and practice. The body of the thesis is divided into three parts, with a discussion of the binary oppositions respectively, including language and meaning, translated texts and originals, and the translator and the author. The fifth chapter deals with the conclusion of the thesis, and it presents the summary and also, the limitations and expectations.The author hopes to give some guidance to the future research into translation. Once we are not at a loss to find a better solution to Chinese verse translation, we can widespread Chinese poetry in order to better improve cross-cultural communication but also provide futures researchers with materials of help.
