Translation is increasingly important nowadays. People from different countries deal with political affairs, coordinate global economy and trade, promote cultural communication by translation. In the world today, "soft power" such as idea and culture, power of the role, right to speak is being much more emphasized than before. Countries are becoming more interested in Chinese culture and literature. At the same time, Chinese scholars are popularizing more excellent Chinese culture and literature so that they can better disseminate China, enabling the whole world to share Chinese civilization and shape a harmonious world together.Among the many scholars who engage in the translation of ancient Chinese literature, Xu Yuanchong is a bright star. This 90-year old translator, professor of Peking University, is the only person in China, even in the world, who can translate among Chinese, English and French. His greatest achievement is that he translated poetry from Chinese into English and French, totally in verse rhythm but not prose form. He has been translating all his life, and continues his career tirelessly. He achieved greatly in both translation and theory. And what is studied in this thesis is only one small tip of the iceberg, hoping to provide wide views from a small confined space. The subject of the thesis is Xu Yuanchong's Tang Poetry Translation into English. The thesis expounds Xu Yuanchong's theory system on the Tang Poetry translation on the basis of discussing the controversies concerning Poetry translation, elaborates the application and exemplification of Xu Yuanchong's poetry translation theories, by comparing different translators and their versions with his. This thesis chooses some examples of Tang Poetry translation, pointing to summarizing the contribution of Xu Yuanchong and commenting objectively Xu Yuanchong's poetry translation and his theory.
