This thesis attempts to make a comprehensive analysis and objective evaluationof the English translation of Yang Jiang’s Baptism. As the only novel of Yang Jiang,Baptism has attracted great attention from scholars of modern Chinese literature. However, since the publication of its translated version in2007, only a few researcheshave been carried out to investigate the translation, all of which are from one-sidedperspective such as full-sense translation, reproduction of language styles, domestication and information focus. Therefore a comprehensive exploration into thetranslation is in need. When analyzing the features of the English translation of Baptism, the authorfirst makes an analysis of the translators’ choice-makings of text, cultural stance andinterpreting and transferring text meaning and then probes into the contextual andstructural features of the translation. Contextual features of translation are expoundedon from communicative context and linguistic context. Structural features oftranslation consist of the analysis of irony which is the most prominent character ofYang Jiang’s style and syntactic structures. Meanwhile, Verschueren’s concept ofadaptation is adopted for the evaluation of the translation. Whether the original work’scultural flavor have been retained as much as possible, readers’ acceptability has beenconsidered properly, or Yang Jiang’s art of irony and linguistic style have beenreproduced will be discussed and tentative suggestions will be proposed by the author.
