This thesis studies the translation features of Mr. Fang Chong in Gleanings from TaoYuan-ming (Prose&Poetry). Mr. Fang Chong was a noted English and American literaturescholar, accomplished translator and respected professor from Shanghai InternationalStudies University. His major academic achievements include the research and translationof Chaucer’s works and of Tao Yuanming’s poems and poetry. He spent about forty yearson the translation of Tao Yuanming’s works until its publication, and the translation isregarded as the fruit of his life-long effort. However, until now, there is almost nosystematic academic research on this translation. This is a loss regarding the developmentof translation studies.The primary purpose of this thesis is to find out and summarize the translationfeatures of Mr. Fang Chong. It will research on lexical, syntactical and discourse levelthoroughly. His translation methods and ideas will be discussed, too. The research iscarried out through intensive reading of the translation and comparison with the translatedworks of other scholars. Meanwhile, this thesis will adopt the “Three Principles of Beauty”on poetry translation by Mr. Xu Yuanchong to analyze the features summarized and seewhether and how the translation features help to transfer the beauty in sense, sound andform from the original poems and poetry to the translated works. His strength andweakness will be discussed and his emphasis on the beauty of sense will be pointed out. Itis hoped that this research will be inspirational to translation learners and scholars.
