The optical illusion has been researched for more than150years, when thetheory has been used widely in various fields of human scioal life. Within the realm ofart, it is usually applied to art works based on two-dimensional space, such asprintmakings, paintings, relievos and graphic design works. Besides, a fewthree-dimensional works also utilize the theory, such as sculpture and architecture.Now, the rapid development of the world economy brings the construction ofurban public sculpture a good chance. The public sculpture of cities around the worldhas sprung up,erecting so many excellent and classic urban public sculptures for theworld. However, their creative outlooks become more and more similar. Visualreading of the public on urban public sculpture is becoming fatigueder, harder to beinterested in the usual urban public sculpture.Following with these questions and the attention to the visual illusion, inconjunction with the educational background, the author began the research of puttingthe visual illusion into the contemporary urban public sculpture.The article was divided into three sections. In the first section, The concept andtheory related to the optical illusion, and the status of urban public sculpture wereexplained simply. In the second section, the emphasis of the article, the authoranalyzed the art works involved in the visual illusion theory and urban publicsculpture cases, and then summarized the general performance forms of the visualillusion in the urban public sculpture. Meanwhile, based on national cultural traditionsand historical context, the author discussed the cases of the visual illusion’sapplication in the field of cultural traditions, and the creative consciousness of thecontemporary urban public sculpture melting old casts used for the new ones. In thethird section, the author conducted two experimental cases and the publicquestionnaire,and finally showed the prospects of the urban public sculpture.
