“San Yan”, including the novel scripts of “Yu Shi Ming Yan”,“Jing Shi Tong Yan” and“Xing Shi Heng Yan” which were written by Feng Meng Long who was the famous litterateurin the late of Ming Dynasty, was one of the most important collections of vernacular Chineseshort stories. Because of the tremendous academic value and artistic charm, the researchers hadput much focus on “San Yan” all the time. The theme of female image has been the new spot inthe recent ten years and a batch of high-quality tomes have sprung out by the comprehensiveand multilayer discussion of the researchers. Putting on much focus on the specific types andfigures but referring rarely to the others, the researchers haven’t made an intensive, systematicachievement on the complex image of “deserted wife” in “San Yan” so far.On the basis of the reasons mentioned above, this paper pick the topic of deserted wife asthe research object and try to illustrate the artistic value and social connotations through themeans of comprehensive combing and investigation.Originate from the poetry of deserted wife in the Book of Songs, the image of desertedwife referred to the abandoned female in the relation of couples or lovers and it last long in thehistory of Chinese culture because of the cultural tradition and the insistence of scholars.Seen from the large proportion and quantities of the articles in “San Yan”, the topic ofimages of abandoned females was the most important among others in “San Yan” for FengMeng Long who concentrated his all efforts into it. This paper summarizes the reasons forabandoning as “innocence type” and “mistake type” and divides their fates into the forms ofremarry, reconciliation, reducing to prostitution and dying for love. Hoping to do thecomprehensive and systematic research on the images of the deserted, the paper classifies thedeserted wife as “the common abandoned”,“the eunuch abandoned” and “the prostituteabandoned” from the economic perspective. The last part of the paper combs the reasons for the formation of Affection Thought ofFeng Meng Long through the aspects of social foundation, academic trend and individualexperience and in the meantime, interprets the theme through the dimensions of love respect, constraints on emotion and enlightenment. It holds the opinions that though emphasizing thetrue love, Feng Meng Long had no conflicts with the social norm and ethics but attempted to integrate secular human and traditional Confucianism..On the one hand, Feng showedsympathetic and justified to the suffering of the abandoned accompanying with the reasonableand satisfactory ending for their virgin-losing and merit-losing, but on the other hand, hereshaped those females as corresponding with the traditional social values and merits whichappeared to be: the break of sexual passion had been attached to the traditional Chastity view, the wisdom of the abandoned had been imprisoned in the fence of marriage, the surrender andthe practitioner for the feudal ethics and rites at heart. In a word, the complexity andcontradictoriness in the deserted wives in San Yan was the exactly the concentrated reflectionof the Feng’s Affection Thought.
