This essay mainly research on the core meanings of "Neng" in Chinese modal verb and investigates on polysemy modal verbs of modern Chinese and modal expressions in Korean.The modal verbs in Chinese are one of the difficulties for foreigners who are learning Chinese. Korean students always make mistakes since they cannot distinguish the modal verbs which have similar meanings.This essay discusses the core meanings of "Neng" in Chinese modal verb. On the basis of collecting amounts of lingual data, summary of the studies on modal verb in Chinese. It is a general introduction of the former studies. Firstly, make an analysis of grammar distinguishing in modern Chinese modal verb "Neng". Secondly, as well as compare that with Korean core meanings of that. So as to reveal the similarities and differences of modal verbs semantics between Korean and Chinese, and find out the corresponding regulations. It is valuable that helping the Korean students who are learning Chinese to understand more clearly.There are six parts in this essay.Chapter one:exordium. This part introduces the posing problems, research aims, scope of this thesis, theoretical background of research and the methodology.Chapter two:summary of the studies on modal verbs in Chinese. It is a general introduction of the former studies. There are two parts in this chapter:firstly, the arguments of the names of modal verbs in Chinese and the summary on types and ranges of modal verbs; secondly, it described prior researches that have been done in the area of modal verb "Neng"Chapter three:the semantics of common used modal expressions in Korean. It comprehensively inductive the semantic items of the main modal expressions in Korean.Chapter four:the syntactic structure of "Neng" and as well as comparison that with the Korean core meanings were investigated. To understand the similarities and differences of modal expressions in Chinese and Korean can improve our teaching foresee-ability and help students to avoid the interferences from mother tongue.Chapter five:the comparison of semantics of common used modal verbs between Korean and Chinese. This chapter finds out the main expression methods in Korean and Chinese by comparing the semantics of common used modal verbs in both Korean and Chinese.Chapter six:conclusion. The data was summarized.
