The functions of Chinese modal verbs “Neng,Hui,Keyi” are generally the equivalent of “(?)[ac?:]” in Cambodia,but there are still some differences between them,which causes the errors in the Cambodian students' Chinese acquisition.But till to now,there has little contrastive study.In this thesis,the author contrasts “Neng,Hui,Keyi” and “(?)[ac?:]” by applying the modality theory and analyzes the Cambodian students errors in the acquisition of “Neng,Hui,Keyi” and puts forward some teaching strategies.The study may help the Cambodian students learn “Neng,Hui,Keyi” more effectively and help the Chinese teachers use better methods to teaching them.The first chapter is an introduction.It introduces the aim and scope,the significance and value,the methods of the research and the source of the corpus.The second chapter is an literature review.It makes a review on the study of“Neng,Hui,Keyi”.First it makes a brief introduction on the study of the name of Chinese modal verbs,their definitions and their number.Second it explores the study on“Neng,Hui,Keyi” separately.Third it explores the study on Cambodian “(?)[ac?:]”.Due to the limited theoretical level,this study is very superficial.Only several scholars have studied it.The third chapter is a similarity contrast between “Neng,Hui,Keyi” and“(?)[ac?:]” from the aspects of semantic and grammar.In semantic,“(?)[ac?:]” can express “having the ability to do something,resuming the ability,having effects on something,having some usage,possibility” like “Neng”.It can express “ability,possibility” like “Hui”.It can express “having the condition to realize something,usage,permission” like “Keyi”.In grammar,“Neng,Hui,Keyi” and “(?)[ac?:]” share many similarities in the syntactic position and negative expression.The fourth chapter is an analysis on the differences between“Neng,Hui,Keyi” and “(?)[ac?:]”.In semantic,unlike “Neng”,“(?)[ac?:]” can't express “being good at something?permission”.Unlike “Hui”,“(?)[ac?:]” can't express “ability,being good at something”.Unlike “Keyi”,“(?)[ac?:]” can't express “ deserving”.In grammar,“Neng,Hui,Keyi” and “(?)[ac?:]” have many differences in syntactic positions and the affirmative and negative question.The fifth chapter is an analysis on the errors made by the Cambodian students while they learn “Neng,Hui,Keyi” and the strategies put forward after it.The main errors are the negative transfer of the mother tongue,the generalization of the target language and the improper application of communication strategies.The teaching strategies are mainly on the improvement of teachers' ability,the compiling of textbooks,the organization of teaching and the design of practices.
