Modal verbs are a special category of Chinese verbs that used to express the subjective attitude or opinion of the speaker, which are also the key and difficult points in the learning process of second language learners.Based on the relevant corpus in HSK Dynamic Composition Corpora of Peking University, this dissertation intends to investigate the acquisition of modal verb "Neng" by second language learners from three different mother tongue backgrounds:Thai,Korean and English. It plans to investigate the different sentence patterns and the different grammatical function types of modal verb "Neng" through the method of quantitative corpus? The dissertation contains six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which introduces the research status of modal verbs and explains the research object and content of this dissertation. The second chapter describes the research design. This chapter mainly introduces the principles and methods of quantitative corpus, including the selection and processing of corpus, the statistics and analysis of data, etc. The third chapter analyzes the acquisition of second language learners in different sentence patterns. The results show that second language learners with different mother tongue backgrounds have similar acquisition of sentence patterns, and no obvious differences are found.Among them, the proportion of five sentence patterns used by second language learners from different mother tongue backgrounds is extremely unbalanced, with a large number of use of the sentence pattern "Neng VP",very few use of the sentence pattern "Bu Neng VP",and the proportion of the use of other sentence patterns is extremely low, which can be ignored basically. In addition, compared with Chinese native speakers, second language learners all overuse the sentence pattern "Neng VP" and significantly less use the sentence pattern "Bu Neng VP".There is a large quantity difference between the sentence patterns used by second language learners and that of Chinese native speakers, which means that the acquisition is not good? The fourth chapter analyzes the acquisition of second language learners in different types of grammatical functions. The results show that the acquisition of different grammatical function types of second language learners from different mother tongue backgrounds is roughly similar. Most of "Neng X" is used as predicate,a few as object and attribute, and very few as subject, which can be ignored basically, and none as complement. In addition, there is no significant difference in the usage of the modal verb "Neng" between second language learners and Chinese native speakers, which means that second language learners do well in the acquisition of modal verbs “Neng” at the grammatical level. The fifth chapter puts forward some suggestions on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language based on the above study. In the future teaching process of modal verb "Neng",we should optimize the explanation of sentence pattern "Bu Neng VP" and increase the communicative classroom activities. In addition,in the process of futureTeaching Chinese as a Second Language,we can learn from the method of quantitative corpus, which rely on big data to know the learning situation of students in time and improve it according to specific problems. The last chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes the conclusions of the study, and looks forward to the related research in the future.
